Light displays and refracts; it creates drama and provides delivery to shadows. Textbook definitions might prohibit mild to a scientific phenomenon, however when seen via a creative lens, it positive aspects new that means. And, that is what Chennai-based kids’s theatre firm, The Little Theatre focusses on, in its new different studying initiative, ArtsLab.
Devised as totally different modules, ArtsLab’s first chapter, Exploring Light, goals to interact kids with the scientific phenomenon via theatre, music, dance and artwork in a month-long course.
“The idea stems from my own personal experience at school. At some point, I fell off the education system’s bandwagon because I couldn’t relate to what I was being taught. Either I had to mug things up or understand in bits and pieces. All we end up doing is containing this knowledge without being able to employ it to be creative,” says Krishnakumar Balasubramanian (KK), inventive director of The Little Theatre who can even lead the module of Theatre on this workshop.
With faculties attempting to adapt to an internet medium, kids appear to have fewer alternatives for experiential studying. This is the place ArtsLab is available in. “The main aim is to introduce arts by incorporating science into it. We just want the kids to have fun and learn in the process.”
Exploring mild was a alternative that got here from the necessity to cater to the essential sensory modules, to start with. While bodily properties of sunshine might be explored via theatre, ideas like reflection and refraction might be informed via artwork. In addition, wavelengths and frequencies might be handled, in motion and dance. These concepts will take form over the course of a narrative. To take a look at mild as a supply of drama, shadow puppetry will come into play.
While the theatre module of Exploring Light might be captained by KK, singer Lavita Lobo will lead music classes, choreographer Vikas Rao will concentrate on motion and dance and artist Ranjani Ramakrishnan will facilitate artwork classes. The group is toying with the concept of sound for the subsequent chapter.
“The long term goal is to get more educators on board and enable them to find more innovative ways to teach,” says KK.
